After getting only a few hours of sleep we were up for breakfast in order to take our first expedition of the day. Since we were exhausted we were glad we had chosen the short hike. It did not disappoint. We saw a mockingbird, Galapagos Dove, Galapagos Hawk, many Marine Iguanas and Sally Crabs lounging on the lava rock on the sandy beach. We returned to the shore and retrieved the snorkel equipment that had been provided to us before our expedition. This was my first time snorkeling and I have to say that I was more than just a little nervous. I entered the warm and refreshing water with many trepidations and secured my snorkel mask. I practiced putting my face into the water and when I did I saw thousands of small silver fish swimming in schools around my legs. I removed my snorkel mask and watched as the fish swam all around. It would seem that even if you aren't a very good snorkeler, in the Galapagos Islands you can still have a pretty good experience watching sea life in the water. After snorkeling we returned to the ship and had lunch. I was eating my weight in ceviche which was fresh and delicious while Michael enjoyed a fish and rice dish prepared Cajun style. We took a Zodiak tour to the Rabida Islands afterwards where we saw more Marine Iguanas, Sea Lions, Sea Turtles, Galapagos Terns and Gulls. We watched a Pelican nose-dive into the water and pull out a giant fish which he quickly inserted into his gullet. A friend on the tour took the best photo (in my opinion) of the fish inside the Pelican's veiny gullet where you could see the outline of the doomed fish. Awesome!

paula verduMichael and I travel mostly because we like learning and experiencing new things, seeing new places and learning about different cultures and food that only comes from getting out and about in the world. Archives
